Research Fellow in the QHPC group at the University of Oviedo (Department of Computer Science / CS & AI).
Daniel Álvarez Conde is a Computer Engineering graduate and a Research Assistant in the Quantum High Performance Computing (QHPC) group at the University of Oviedo. His work sits at the intersection of high-performance computing, embedded systems, and applied machine learning, with a particular focus on real-time constraints and deployments with social and healthcare impact.
He gained international research experience as a CERN openlab Summer Student, selected from more than 2,000 applicants worldwide. At CERN, he implemented and optimized the Kahan Summation algorithm on NVIDIA GPUs using CUDA, contributing a high-precision numerical solution integrated into the ROOT ecosystem and adopted by the user community.
In parallel, he has led the design and deployment of a wearable mobility-assistance system for children with early visual impairment, built around smart glasses. The platform integrates depth sensing, sonification, and on-device object detection (including edge inference), later evolving towards a lighter, more portable hardware and a refined 3D design. The system was validated through field trials in Mexico with dozens of children, showing rapid adaptation and, in at least one case, clinically observable improvements in residual visual perception consistent with early neuroplasticity hypotheses.
Beyond QHPC, Daniel is active in robotics and autonomous systems as Head of Software and Autonomous Drone Systems Lead at 4Space Uniovi, coordinating multidisciplinary development efforts for competition platforms. He was also a Global Winner of the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2024 with the AsturExplorers team (including an invitation to present at NASA GSFC, Washington DC). He contributes to scientific community building as the coordinator of the CERN Alumni Oviedo group, promoting outreach and networking initiatives, and he brings additional leadership and decision-making experience from his background as a federated football referee with extensive match practice.
